High School Course Descriptions

 

AGRISCIENCE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

 

ANIMAL SCIENCE - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 – Pre-Requisites: None - Students will be or will become FFA members and carry a SAE career experience program. In this introductory level course, the student will develop employability skills in the science of animal agriculture. Topics covered will include: the importance of animals in society, consumer concerns, animal welfare, the large animal industry, poultry industry, dairy industry, equine industry, and aquaculture industry, alternative animal agriculture, an overview of the small animal industry, scientific classification of animals, animal behavior, animal genetics, scientific selection of animals, the reproduction process, animal growth and development, animal nutrition, meat science, milk quality and dairy products, parasites of animals and animal diseases. In addition, leadership and communication skills will be gained through FFA involvement in leadership contests, career preparation events, cooperative projects on the school farm/land lab, committee work, chapter activities, and leadership conferences.

 

BOTANY - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: None - Students will be or will become FFA members and carry a SAE career experience program. In this introductory level course, the student will develop employability skills in the science of crops, horticulture, and landscaping. Topics covered will include: the importance of plants in society, careers, plant anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, growth requirements, nutrition, soils, propagation, controlled environment agriculture, hydroponics, integrated pest management, container grown plants, plants in the landscape, lawn and turf grass establishment and maintenance, vegetable/fruit gardening, forestry, soil conservation and land measurement/management. In addition, leadership and communication skills will be gained through FFA involvement in leadership contests, career preparation events, cooperative projects on the school farm/land lab, committee work, chapter activities, and leadership conferences.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE - 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: 70% in Physical Science, Biology, Animal Science, or Botany - In this course, students will study environmental science using earth science and ecology concepts to address environmental concerns on local, national, and world levels. Students in the course will be expected to take an active role in local environmental projects, which will also involve community service.

 

AG SHOP - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: Students will be accepted by application approval and carry Supervised Occupational Experience Program. Students will be FFA members. Students will need coveralls by the second Friday of class. - In this course students will develop skills and understandings as measured by the performance objectives in the area of Ag Mechanics necessary for maintenance and job entry. The students will have skills in carpentry, welding, electrical, small engine, and preventative maintenance. Students will demonstrate skills in assembly, construction, and repair. Skills will be gained in leadership and communication through FFA.

 

AG BUSINESS - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: Students will be accepted upon application approval. All students will need Supervised Occupational Experience Program and must be an FFA member. Students will need Botany and Animal Science. - In this course students will demonstrate skills and understandings as measured by the performance objectives. Students will have the responsibility of the management of the school land lab and will use cooperative skills in the areas of budgets, cash flow and receipts, financing, insurance, marketing, law, labor management, and record keeping systems. Employability and leadership skills will be gained through FFA participation.

 

ART

 

ART I: INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING AND DESIGN - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 Pre-Requisites: None – This course should be completed before taking Art II: Advanced Design and Intro to Painting or Art III: 3-Dimensional Design. - In this course students will be given a chance to experiment with a wide variety of materials and develop a wide range of skills. The class will cover such areas as color, perspective, shading, drawing, painting, textures, line and design, etc. Students are expected to purchase some of their art supplies and this is part of their grade in the class.

 

ART II: ADVANCED DESIGN AND INTRO TO PAINTING - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: Art I: Introduction to Drawing and Design. - In this course students will be given a chance to experiment with a variety of materials and develop a wide range of skills. The class will cover such areas as painting, printmaking, calligraphy, papermaking, and face and figure drawing. Students are expected to purchase some of their art supplies and this is part of their grade in class.

 

ART III: 3-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN -1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: Art I: Introduction to Drawing and Design. - In this art class students will experiment with a variety of materials and develop a broad range of skills. The class will work in such areas as design problems, ceramics, sculpture, mixed media, metal relief, etc. Students are expected to purchase some of their art supplies and this is part of their grade in class.

 

BUSINESS

 

ACCOUNTING I - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: None - In this course students will be taught how to keep business records so that they may enter the job market at a competent level. Students will obtain knowledge to keep books for their own business or to work as a bookkeeper in the business field.


ACCOUNTING II
- 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: Accounting I - In this course students will review the accounting cycle, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. Students will learn how to account for partnerships, unpaid receivables, and depreciation. Students will also learn how to figure the end of a fiscal year and basic corporate accounting.


MARKETING
- 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 Pre-Requisite: None - In this course students will be taught and experience a retail operation, so they can enter the job market at a competent level. Students will learn every aspect of a retail operation. Pending Board approval, it will be offered as an independent study during lunch and before school.

 

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

 

SPANISH I -1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisite: None - Spanish I is an introductory course in the Spanish language and its accompanying culture. The course will provide a basic understanding of Spanish sentence structure, vocabulary, and customs through readings, lectures, movies, and special projects. Students will be expected to master basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language.


SPANISH II
- 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisite: Spanish I - Spanish II is the second year course in the study of the Spanish language. After a review of the basic knowledge learned in Spanish I, the student will begin to express himself/herself with increasing complexity and vocabulary. Students will be expected to refine his/her use of Spanish grammar and pronunciation.


SPANISH III
- 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 Pre-Requisites: Spanish I and Spanish II - Spanish III is the third year course in the study of the Spanish language. After a review of the basic knowledge learned in Spanish I and II, the student will increase his/her ability to express ideas in a wider scope. Students will be expected to increase proficiency in grammar and vocabulary and pronunciation.


SPANISH IV
- 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: Spanish I, Spanish II and Spanish III - Spanish IV is the fourth year course in the study of the Spanish language. After a review of the basic knowledge learned in Spanish I, II, and III, the student will work toward fluency in the language. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of complex language structures.

 

HEALTH

 

HEALTH - 1 semester - Grade Level: 9 - Pre-Requisite: None - In this course students will study areas of nutrition, communicable diseases, chronic and degenerative diseases, first aid, and the health impact of drugs, alcohol and tobacco use and abuse.


HEALTHY LIVING
- 1 semester - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: Health 9 - In the class students will focus on the skills necessary for successful independent living. Topics will include goal setting, conflict resolution, parenting, health care accessibility and life-long fitness.

 

TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

 

MACHINE WOODWORKING - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: None - In this course students will work basically with wood. They will design and build a footstool or table, do a refinishing project, make a project on the lathe, and build a wood model.


BASIC DRAFTING
- 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: None - This is an introductory course into drafting fundamentals and techniques. Areas covered will include sketching, lettering, use and care of equipment, 3-view, pictorials, tolerancing, sections, surface developments, and perspectives.


HOME MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
- 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: None - In this class we will cover use and care of tools, plaster/drywall repair, redecorating with paint, window/door repair, exterior carpentry repairs, and basic electrical repairs. - The Ag Shop portion will cover use and care of tools, basic plumbing, small engine care, basic welding, fasteners, insulation, career opportunities and basic cement work.


ADVANCED WOODWORKING
- 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: Machine Woodworking - In this course students will explore woodworking in depth. The students will be required to build a major project containing doors and drawers, a wood model, a major lathe project, a teaching aide, and prepare for and complete a class demonstration.


BASIC CONSTRUCTION
- 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: Basic Drafting, Machine Woodworking, and Department approval. - This is a skill based elective for tenth through twelfth grade students in Industrial Arts.


ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING
- 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: Basic Drafting - In this class the student will prepare a working set of house plans of their own design. We will cover building materials, types of construction, room planning, site planning, and community factors. The student will prepare a plot plan, footing and foundation floor plans, elevations, elevation details, framing plans, mechanical plans, perspective drawings, and a pictorial rendering.

 

AUTOCAD - 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: Basic Drafting

 

COMPUTER LITERACY - 1 year - Grade Level: 9 - Pre-Requisites: None - In this course students will be introduced to computers and their uses. Topics covered will include keyboard techniques, the history of computers, careers using computers, computer application in our daily lives, elementary problem solving using computers, and the basics of data management.


ADVANCED COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
-1 year -Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisite: A course in basic computer application skills - In this course students will create projects focusing on advanced word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software applications. The students will also learn how to design a Web page, and incorporate multi-media using Hyper Studio.


COMPUTER TECHNICIAN - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisite: Department Approval - The learner will use basic computer knowledge to diagnose, repair, and upgrade computer systems under the supervision of the district Technology Coordinator. During the course, the student will continue to learn and broaden his/her knowledge on Windows operating systems, use of e-mail, Internet applications, and basic Novell, Windows 95 networking environments.

 

LANGUAGE ARTS

 

ENGLISH 9 - 1 year - Grade Level: 9 - Pre-Requisite: None - In this course, students will receive an introduction to high school English. They will study English grammar, spelling, vocabulary, paragraph and theme structure, and literature. The course will include units in expository writing, creative writing, poetry, the short story, drama, the novel, and library research.


ENGLISH 10
- 1 year - Grade Level: 10 - Pre-Requisites: English 9 - In this course, students will receive an introduction to world literature, formal research writing, and career English. Considerable attention will be directed toward improving writing skills, as well as reading and research skills.


ENGLISH 11
- 1 year - Grade Level: 11 - Pre-Requisites: English 9 and English 10 - In this course, students will read a selection of American works, which includes short stories, novels, essays, and poetry. Through compositions and discussion, students will relate their understanding of the works to the cultural and historical development of America. Students will also research and write about various subjects not directly related to literature.


JOURNALISM
- 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: Two years of English - In this course, students will learn the writing skills particular to the field of journalism. Students will also have an opportunity to work together in the production of their own publications by assuming the various roles necessary to plan, write, edit, interview for, critique, produce, and sell their newspaper and yearbook.


SPEECH AND WRITING
- 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: English 9 and English 10 - In this course students will develop the skills needed to successfully speak in front of an audience confidently and assuredly. Creating an outline, developing an organization, and delivering a presentation will be practiced through a variety of speech assignments. In addition to speaking, students will further develop writing skills through critical analysis of existing and student generated writing.


THEATRE ARTS
- 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: Speech or English 9 - This course is designed to introduce the student to drama and the world of the theatre through readings, lectures, discussions, projects, activities, and the viewing of productions. So that the student may better understand theatre as an art form, our study will focus not only on the elements of theatre, but its artists, productions, and history. The student will study basic principles of directing and will have practical opportunities to apply knowledge through exercises and assignments. Topics to be discussed include the directing process, play analysis, script selection, production organization, and stage terminology.


CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE AND ISSUES
- 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: English 9 - In this course, students will receive an introduction to contemporary literature, including required and optional texts, based on contemporary issues. It should be noted that some of the reading might contain mature content.


INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisite: Successful completion of one term of Journalism and teacher permission. - In this course, students who have successfully completed one term of Journalism may continue participation in the yearbook and newspaper if their schedules prohibit enrollment in the regular class or if special projects such as editing demand additional time. As in the regular class, students will continue to learn the writing skills particular to the field of journalism. Students will have an opportunity to work independently in the production of the student publications, and they will assume the necessary roles to plan, write, edit, interview for, critique, produce, and sell their newspaper and yearbook.


COLLEGE PREP ENGLISH - 1 year - Grade Level: 12 - Pre-Requisites: Three years of high school English - In this course, students will concentrate on those skills, which are necessary for success in college, specifically reading with comprehension, articulate and meaningful writing, and research. This course also includes an intensive study of vocabulary and a concentrated review of all fundamentals of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. In addition, the student will read numerous English literature selections from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present. These selections will include poetry, short stories, plays, and novels, and the students will be responsible for their content and analysis.

 

ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: Two or three years of successfully completed high school English - In this course, students will study classic and contemporary pieces of literature, which are usually found on college reading lists. In addition, students will write numerous essays and take many practice tests in preparation for the Advanced Placement tests given in the spring. Success on the AP tests will usually result in the granting of college credit or the waiving of certain courses.

 

MATHEMATICS

 

TRANSITION MATH -1 year - Grade Level: 9 - Pre-Requisites: Pre-Algebra AND math teacher recommendation. - In this course students will learn about integers and the real number system. They will solve equations and inequalities and learn to graph on the real number line as well as the Cartesian Coordinate Plane. They will be introduced to basic geometry and algebra concepts.

 

ALGEBRA IA - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-10 - Pre-Requisites: Recommendation of department. - Students will understand the basic structure of the real number system, work with basic linear equations, reinforce their ability to work with fractions, and learn to add and subtract polynomials.

ALGEBRA IB - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-11 - Pre-Requisites: Algebra IA and recommendation of department.
Students will reinforce their understanding of the real number system, learn to solve linear inequalities, and begin to work with non-linear equations. This course focuses heavily on graphing and application of algebraic concepts.


ALGEBRA I - 1 year - Grade Level: 8-12 - Pre-Requisites: Pre-Algebra, Teacher recommendation from Pre-Algebra teacher. - In this course students will understand the basic structure of the real number system, using commutative, associative, and distributive properties. They will be able to solve word problems and practical applications. Students will use deductive reasoning and precision language in setting up and solving problems. This course prepares students for further work in mathematics and science.


APPLIED MATH - 1 year -Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: Transition Math, or Algebra IA and IB, or Algebra I - In this course students will be able to use basic mathematical skills particular to technical vocations. The course is oriented toward applications and practice of mathematical concepts and skills in hands-on situations and practical, vocational problems.


GEOMETRY - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: Algebra I (C average recommended) - In this course students will study basic geometric figures and facts and use correct reasoning in proofs to prepare for further work in mathematics and science.


ALGEBRA II - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: Algebra I (C average recommended) - In this course students will review Algebra I in early weeks. The students will learn new topics including polynomial equations, variation, complex numbers, conic sections and new methods of solving equations and inequalities.


STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY - 1 year -Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: Geometry or Algebra II - Recommendation: Students should consider taking this course prior to completion of their junior year. In this course students will focus on probability, logic, reasoning, statistics, and data. Students will learn to analyze statistical data and draw probable conclusions based upon that data. Students will learn how to solve problems in all of these topic areas, and be able to apply their knowledge to the real world.

 

PRE-CALCULUS - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisite: Algebra II - In this course students will review Algebra II in early weeks. The students will take a graphical approach using graphical calculators to study trigonometry, probability, logarithms, exponential functions, and other selected topics of Pre-Calculus. An introduction to Calculus will also be included.


CALCULUS - 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: Pre-Calculus - The students will understand the meaning of calculus and reasons for derivatives and integrals in addition to mastering the real number system, logarithms, and functions.

 

MODIFIED STUDIES

 

Pre-Requisites: All modified studies courses are available only to identified special education students by the I.E.P. process - Each year, math, science, and social studies courses are offered on a rotation basis. Course offerings are contingent upon the needs of the majority of the students and the flexibility of the schedule. The following are modified studies courses available to special education students:


MODIFIED ENGLISH – 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 – This one term course meets a one-year English requirement for special education students. All special education students are required to meet the number of English credits required for graduation. This course provides a foundation in communications, handwriting skills, developmental reading, vocabulary, creative writing, spelling, grammar, composition, literature exploration, reference, study skills, and computer application.


MODIFIED BASIC MATH I - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 – This one term course is for those special education students who need to review basic computation skills and continue to work in the areas of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, ratio, proportions, percents, life skills math application, and English and metric measurements.


MODIFIED PRE-ALGEBRA I – 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 – This one term course is for those special education students who are able to go beyond the basic skills of math. This course will encompass mathematical problems involving the order of operations, positive and negative integers, expressions, solving equations, decimals, number theory, rational numbers, ratios, proportions, percents, and solving inequalities.


MODIFIED PRE-ALGEBRA II – 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 – This one term course is for those special education students who have successfully mastered the Modified Pre-Algebra I course. This course is a continuation of the Modified Pre-Algebra I course. The math areas addressed will include: graphing, basic geometry, formulas, measurement, statistics and probability, and polynomials.


MODIFIED U.S. HISTORY I -1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 – This one term course meets a U.S. History requirement. This content parallels the regular education United States History course. Attention will be focused on the American economic, political, and social way of life from the 1400s to the Civil War. Emphasis will be placed on the development of the student as a responsible informed citizen.

MODIFIED U.S. HISTORY II – 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 – This one term course is a continuation of the Modified U.S. History I course. Students do not have to complete U.S. History I in order to take this course. This course will be focused on the American economic, political, and social way of life from 1865 to the present. Emphasis will be placed on the development of the student as a responsible informed citizen.

MODIFIED GOVERNMENT – 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 – This is a one term course required for high school graduation. This course is designed to examine the basic institutions and processes of the American governmental system and includes federal, state, and local governments. Emphasis will be placed on the development of the student as a responsible informed citizen.


MODIFIED ECONOMICS – 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 – This is a one term course required for high school graduation. This course parallels the regular education economics course. In this course students will learn the concepts and principals of economics relating to economic theories, supply and demand, and productivity. In addition, students will make connections to his/her life as a consumer. Practical skills will include money management, checking and saving accounts, interest rates, GNP, tax forms, and an introduction to the stock market.


MODIFIED BIOLOGY – 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 – This one term course meets a science requirement for special education students. In this course students will study the science of living things. This class is a laboratory-lecture combination. Content will include cell theory, systems classification, heredity, ecology, zoology, reproduction, animal and human behavior, and other topics.


MODIFIED LIFE SKILLS – 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 – Pre-Requisite: By teacher permission only. This one or two term course is designed to assist special education students in preparation for his/her life as a functional adult. Content includes interpersonal and family relationships, study skills, career preparation, life management, healthy living, foods and nutrition, clothing, housing, sewing, and small business planning.


FINE ARTS

 

JUNIOR/SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR - 1 year - Grade Level: 7-12 - Pre-Requisite: Teacher Approval/Audition - Choir members will participate in what is generally considered a performance organization. The first term in the school year focuses on the choral ensemble aspect of vocal singing. The second term of the school year focuses on the musical production aspect of vocal singing. The first term choir is involved in several performances at the school and in the community. The second term choir is involved with preparing the entire musical performance which takes place in the spring. They design and build the props, create their own costumes, run the sound and lights for the performance and perform the musical in its entirety multiple times for an audience.


HIGH SCHOOL BAND - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisite: Satisfactory performance in Junior High Band and teacher approval - Band members will participate in what generally is considered to be a performing organization. It is, therefore, necessary that the student have a firm grasp of the fundamentals of music and playing before entering the group. The majority of the first 10-12 weeks is marching band. The remainder of the year is spent in concert band. Concert band is involved in several concerts, assembly programs, and MSBOA festivals. Students will also have a chance to perform on an individual or small group basis in the Solo and Ensemble Festival. A wide variety of literature will be performed from the standards (MSBOA music list) to the latest popular music.


PHYSICAL EDUCATION


HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION - 1 semester - Grade Level: 9-10 - Pre-Requisites: None - In this course students will continue with more advanced skills in the activities learned during physical education 7 and 8. More emphasis will be placed on specialization in physical fitness activities and on the lifetime sports such as tennis, golf, badminton, archery, volleyball, and others.


AEROBICS - 1 semester - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: High School Physical Education - The focus of this class will be to increase total body fitness. The student will increase cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility through activities such as video aerobics, running, resistance training and stretching.


SPORT TRAINING - 1 semester - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisite: High School Physical Education or previous waiver of PE - This course is open to students who want to gain added skill, expertise and conditioning in sports. The student will choose as many as three sports to concentrate on; however, one sport may suffice. Many forms of conditioning will be introduced and used such as plyometrics, aerobics, anaerobic conditioning, weight training, flexibility exercises and agility drills just to name a few. Skills and drills will be used to enhance sport performance. For example, if baseball was a sport of interest, batting practice and proper techniques of hitting would be incorporated. Class size would be limited and open to students by instructor and administrative approval. The student, instructor, and coaches would all be responsible for setting goals and following through to insure success.


WEIGHT TRAINING - 1 semester - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisite: High School Physical Education - The student will achieve physical fitness mainly through weight training and some forms of aerobics. Aerobics is a method of conditioning the cardiovascular system, and is just one of three components to total fitness. Strength and flexibility are the other two. The weight training phase of the class will be the major focus and comprise 80% of the time.

 

SCIENCE

 

PHYSICAL SCIENCE - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: None - In this course, students will study the classification of matter, as well as its properties, patterns, and changes. They will explore the relationship between matter and different forms of energy, measurement, and motion.


BIOLOGY - 1 year - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisite: Ninth grade may enroll by permission only - In this course, students will study the science of living things. Problem solving, model building, and laboratory work will be employed to give students a realistic grasp of course content and to allow them to find real world contexts for applying science principles. Content will include cell theory, systems classification, heredity, ecology, zoology, and other topics.


CHEMISTRY - 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: Algebra I and Physical Science (Minimum grade 70% for both classes) - In this course, students will study the structure, composition, and interactions of matter. The class builds on experiential learning and practical application with a heavy emphasis on laboratory exercises. Content will include the following topics: basic reactions, atomic theory, qualitative analysis, periodic table applications, structure of matter, chemical nomenclature, stoichiometry, kinetic molecular theory, and other introductory topics.


PHYSICS - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: Physical Science, Biology and Algebra I (Minimum grade 70% required in all classes). Chemistry not required but highly recommended. In this course, students will study the natural science concerning principles and laws governing the behavior of the inanimate world. The class is an experientially based course, focusing on problem solving. Content will include the following topics: Newton’s Laws of Motion, momentum, fluids, light, sound, and other introductory topics.


ADVANCED BIOLOGY - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: Minimum grade of 70% in Biology and Chemistry - In this course, students will continue their study of living things. Lecture and laboratory activities will focus on human biology. Parallels between life science and the physical sciences will be constructed to gain an understanding of the integration of disciplines.


ADVANCED CHEMISTRY - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: Algebra I and Chemistry (Minimum grade of 70% for both classes) - In this course, students will study chemistry in depth, focusing on the structure, composition, and interactions of matter. The class is a laboratory-lecture combination with approximately ½ of the time spent on laboratory work. Content will include basic reactions, atomic theory, qualitative analysis, periodic table applications, structure of matter, and other topics.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

 

WORLD CULTURES - 1 year - Grade Level: 9 - Pre-Requisites: None - Student will acquire an understanding of the concept of global interdependence and develop an international perspective. Opportunities will be provided for students to examine problems and issues that are shared by all nations and strategies for dealing with these issues. Students will be encouraged to understand, tolerate, and appreciate various cultures. Students will learn to view issues from a global perspective, and will demonstrate an awareness of human rights. In addition, this course will show the ways physical, economic, and cultural geography affect the life of various regions of the world.


CONSTITUTIONAL LAW – A HISTORICAL EXPLORATION OF
- 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 Elective- Pre-Requisites: World Cultures - Constitutional Law will examine practical information and provide problem-solving experience needed for participation in a law focused society. The class will explore the founding of the Republic and establishment of the Constitution as the basis for law in America. It will look at Constitutional and civil law in 20th and 21st century America.


CURRENT WORLD PROBLEMS - 1 year - Grade Level: 10-12 - Pre-Requisites: World Cultures - Current World Problems will develop knowledge of third world nations and other nations, which have an impact on contemporary society. This course will contain a basic map study of the world. Primary emphasis will be on social, political, and economical developments of current nations and these nations’ impact upon the world society. The student will be required to develop an awareness of day to day current events. The student will use current periodicals, newspapers, television broadcasts, and other technology to study the world situation.


U.S. HISTORY - 1 year - Grade Level: 10 - U.S. History will study events in U.S. history during the 20th century. The student will investigate America’s wars, economic growth, industrial development, Governmental growth, social changes, and relationships with nations.


WESTERN CIVILIZATION - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: World Cultures - Students will survey the cultures and history of western civilization from prehistoric times to the present era. They will study the development, geography, religions, politics, and arts of various societies.


EASTERN CIVILIZATION - 1 year - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisite: World Cultures - Students will survey the cultures and history of eastern civilization from prehistoric times to the present era. They will look at the development, geography, religions, politics, and arts of various societies.


PSYCHOLOGY - 1 semester - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: Junior/senior or by instructor permission - Psychology examines the link between the mind and behavior. It will offer the student many personal applications of psychological theory and rhetoric. Through experiments, classroom activities, critical analyses and current periodicals students will gain insight into areas of psychology both past and present. The ultimate goal of this course is to expose students to a variety of theories and to promote critical thinking of such theories.


SOCIOLOGY - 1 semester - Grade Level: 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: Junior/senior or by instructor permission - Sociology will be the study of human relationships. Emphasis will be placed on terminology used in sociology. Students will study social problems, social behavior, social institutions, and collective behavior in order to understand themselves and their personal problems.


ADVANCED PLACEMENT HISTORY - 1 year - Grade Level:10- 12 - Pre-Requisites: American or World History plus other social studies classes - In this course students will study either European history from the Renaissance to the present or American history from colonial times to the present. In addition, they will write numerous essays and take many practice tests in preparation for the Advanced Placement tests given in the spring. Success on the AP tests will usually result in the granting of college credit or the waiving of certain courses.

 

ADVANCED PLACEMENT GOVERNMENT - 1 year - Grade Level 11-12 - Pre-Requisites: AP U.S. History

AMERICAN GOVERNMENT - 1 semester - Grade Level: 11 - Pre-Requisite: U.S. History - Government examines the basic functions of federal, state, county, and municipal government today. Analysis of the U.S. Constitution, the structure of government, and the role of politics are emphasized.

ECONOMICS - 1 semester - Grade Level: 11 - Pre-Requisites: U.S. History - Economics will be a combination of microeconomics and macroeconomics. Students will examine their roles as consumers and how economic decisions at world, national, and state levels affect their lives. Economics will discuss banking, credit, taxes, comparison-shopping, and financial planning and responsibility.

 


TECHNICAL TRAINING

 

CAPITAL AREA CAREER CENTER - Grade Level: 11-12 - Nineteen career and technical programs allow juniors and seniors to begin their occupational training for the future. The various curricula are accredited, hands on, and designed to meet national standards. Students can earn up to two elective credits per term during the half day they spend at the Career Center. Cosmetology students will receive 2-1/2 credits per term. They may also receive college credit depending on the course in which they are enrolled. Students attend half days; Monday through Friday, from 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. or 11:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Students may also apply for apprenticeship in Automotive Tech, Construction Trades, Electronics, Hospitality, and Machine Tool Technology, and have guaranteed employment and a paid associates degree. Some other opportunities that go hand-in-hand with programs at the career center are job placement, co-op, vocational assessment, and work experience. STUDENT ASSISTANT - Grade Level 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: Must have office staff approval - This course will enable students to experience the daily operation of an office. Students will learn practical skills that can be applied to all educational endeavors. Students will learn skills consistent with strong work ethics by working one-on-one with the office staff. This course provides opportunities for students to develop and exhibit individual talents and display creativity. This class may be taken twice.


LIBRARY SCIENCE - Grade Level: 9-12 - Pre-Requisites: Must have librarian’s approval - This course will enable students to experience the daily operation of the High School or Elementary Library Media Center. Students will learn to use all types of media and acquire practical research skills that can be applied to all educational endeavors. Students will learn skills consistent with strong work ethics by working one-on-one with the librarian and library patrons. This course provides opportunities for students to develop and exhibit individual talents, display creativity, and explore special interests. This class may be taken twice.


JOB APPRENTICESHIP - Grade Level: 12 - Students will be allowed to receive one credit per term during their senior year while working on the job in a job that directly relates to their personal career plans. Students must also take or have taken any course or courses that relate to the broad occupation field they have chosen in their educational development plan (EDP). Students and employers must complete an occupational training agreement and keep the school informed of working schedule and duties. This school-to-work program is designed to provide a supervised transition from full time education to employment.
