I interviewed Randy Gascon. He owns Gascon’s Greenhouse. He had had the business for 24 years. He started the business in 1975. He gave me two interesting facts about his business. The reasons are that there is good money in it and when it is cold and snowy it is always warm in the greenhouses.
His business wasn’t located anywhere else. The year 1998 was slow because of road construction. He enjoys his business because you see results such as planting a seed and it grows in a couple of days.
Mr. Gascon has 13 greenhouses and four employees. He started the business by using a 16-foot haywagon and has really built it up since then. The greenhouses get 65 to 75 degrees hot. All 13 greenhouses need to be watered daily. Some of them have automatic water sprinklers. He waters over 40,000
plants by hand each day. His greenhouses contain approximately 50,000 geranimums, 7,000 hanging baskets, 10,000 flats of annuals and 6,000 potted plants.
He starts planting on February 1st. Then he opens his business on May 1st. He is finished with flowers by August. The best times for his business are on Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. He sold a lot of flowers in 1995.
Mr. Gascon gave me two plants to grow. I brought one to school to have in the classroom so we could watch it grow.
