Webberville Students go "Wireless"
Published - January 28, 2004
Webberville Community Schools has been chosen to participate in a Handheld Computer Project sponsored by REMC 13 and the Ingham Intermediate School District. Twenty-five applications were submitted of which only six schools were selected.
Ken Keyes, Webberville High School science teacher, will be provided with a Zire 71 handheld computer and wireless keyboard for himself and each student in his classroom. The handhelds will be the property of the students for the rest of the school year.
The goals of the handheld computer project are to improve student learning, provide students with the skills to lead in the 21 st century workforce, improve teaching by empowering the teacher to teach and share ideas beyond the walls of their classroom and to help foster effective and efficient learning environments.
The emphasis of the project will be on science, with a proposed outcome of improving science MEAP scores and student achievement in science by integrating technology into the classroom. The initial phase of the project will be on science, but the hope is that scores will improve across the board in all subjects.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students” said Jerome Learman, Technology Director for the Webberville Community Schools, “This is just one of many new changes that are coming for our students with the use of instructional technology.”
The students will receive their handhelds and basic training the week of February 2-6, 2004.
