Webberville Band Competes in MSBOA Festival

Saturday, October 9 th the Webberville High School marching band headed to Jackson NW High School to compete in the MSBOA festival. The festival consisted of 20 bands that each perform their half-time show and are scored by a panel of judges in three categories. The judging categories consisted of music, marching, and special effects.
The Webberville band half-time show was created around a train theme. The band was dressed in matching pinstriped overalls and t-shirts to resemble old fashioned train conductors. They performed four songs; Crazy Train, Night Train, Locomotive, and Last Train to Clarksville. The score that a band can receive range from 1 – 5 with 1 being the highest level. The Webberville band achieved a 2 rating which was the highest rating of any class D school that attended the festival.
“I am very proud of what the band achieved given the difficult odds that they faced”, commented Don Hyvarinen, Director of Bands. “We only had 12 school days to prepare since school started after Labor Day this year. The students worked hard and were very dedicated."
In addition to the short amount of time that they had to prepare, the competition occurred on the same day as the district homecoming dance. “The students showed an admirable level of commitment to the band and their performance by sacrificing hair appointments and the prep time that is normally needed before attending homecoming. We arrived back from Jackson only one hour before the start of the dance.”
Mr. Hyvarinen and the band were recognized at the October 18 th board meeting for their accomplishments at the MSBOA festival.
